Music Inside Out workshops were created out of the philosophy
that all humans are innately musical and have a basic right to be
expressive, listened to, and to experience the joy of playing with
others. Classes teach creative music making, or improvisation, as
the most primary of musical skills, not the most advanced. Creative
music comes from the inside-out in contrast to music from the
written page or music from a traditional style that can be said to
come from the outside-in. Music Inside Out classes provide an
environment of safety and non-judgment that encourages risk,
experimentation, and deep learning to occur. Workshops have been
presented for students of all ages, diverse groups seeking to build
alliances, and as creativity seminars for non-musicians and
address the following areas:
Ensemble-“Team Building.” Most non professional and student
ensembles include players of a wide range of abilities. In many
classrooms teachers have to deal with advanced students who may
be bored and beginning students who are overwhelmed and
struggling. In such an atmosphere it is often hard to create the
magical experience of everyone working together and feeling in
synch with each other. Each presentation includes several
exercises that create this experience while allowing each student to
participate at his or her skill level.
Joy in Music. When people first yearn to sing or to play a particular
instrument it is because they love the sound or tone of an
instrument, a certain style of music seems really beautiful to them,
or the people in the band or on the stage look like they are having
fun. Faced with learning the difficult skills of musicianship and
competition many musicians of varying abilities encounter
frustration and the fear that they are just not good enough. Many
participants have stated that in these workshops they re-connected
with their original feelings of joy and inspiration in music.
Performance. For many musicians, especially beginners, nothing
is more frightening than performing alone or in a small ensemble in
front of others. Music Inside Out classes include games adapted
from those used by actors to develop their skill, creativity and
spontaneity in front of an audience. These games are so fun that
students “perform” in front of their peers without even realizing what
they are doing.
